About the artist
Mama in her muumuu is a serene depiction of an elderly Micronesian woman. She’s sitting with a woven fan in hand and a fragrant mwaramwar resting upon her head. This common sight across the islands is one that holds familiarity, comfort and warmth, reminding onlookers of motherly figures, most especially grandmothers and loved ones from home. Kalahngan and kinisou chapur to all the loving, resilient women who have nurtured and helped me to grow.

This piece draws inspiration from Mortlockese and Chuukese artifacts: the gleaming shells woven into her jewelry, the hibiscus-wood comb, and the coral-carved pounder. At the same time, the portrait speaks to the shared connections among Pacific Islanders. Through our traditional practices, tools, and adornments, we find reflections of ourselves in one another.
