The Disappearance of Sipin: A story from Yap

$100.00

The Disappearance of Sipin is inspired by a legend from the island of Yap. A chief who was fiercely protective of the island traditions felt threatened by changes to come from foreigners and the outside world. To safeguard Sipin and ensure their traditional knowledge remained pure and intact, the island sank beneath the surface of the sea where the people continued to live their lives just as they did above water. As years passed by, the island of Sipin sank deeper and deeper into the ocean until one day, it was never seen again. Today, fishermen and locals continue to look for the submerged island and its people. A special thanks to Janet Lukangaw for sharing this legend as inspiration for this piece.
