Rokeroke & Mwesisiar: A story from Chuuk

$100.00

Rokoroke and Mwesisiar is inspired by a tragic legend from the village of Winifei on the island of Tol. It tells of a young woman who paid a painful price after disobeying her elders; two of her sons transformed into sharks and swam off into the ocean, leaving her behind with heartbreak and grief. Years later when she found herself in trouble, they returned to save her, sacrificing their lives as they brought her ashore to safety. The brothers dried up and turned to stone after many years. Today, these rocks remain on the island of Tol and resemble the bodies of the two sharks. A special thanks to Lilian Billimon, who taught me this legend from her home island.
